11-dimensional Interpretation
of Type IIA Theory

We
can interpret M theory with
a circular 11th dimension
of radius R as type IIA
string theory characterized by the string length Lst
and coupling gst,
where
Lst2 = LP3/R
ast
= gst2 = (R/LP)3
= (R/Lst)3
Perturbation
theory is an expansion around gst
= 0 for fixed Lst,
so it's also an expansion around R
= 0.
The
first Kaluza-Klein excitation has mass
M = 1/R
= 1/(gst Lst)
This excitation is a stable nonperturbative state, called a D0
brane, and it plays a fundamental role in the Matrix
Theory proposal.
