S Duality

Sometimes
Theory A at strong coupling
is equivalent to Theory B at weak
coupling.
fA(a)
= fB(1/a)
Three of the five superstring theories in 10 dimensions are related in
this way:
Type I is related to Heterotic
SO(32)
Type IIB is related to
Type IIB
Thus
perturbative effects in one description
correspond to non-perturbative effects
in the other description. Such a relationship cannot be tested in perturbation
theory. Fortunately, because of supersymmetry, many exact predictions
of S dualitycan be made and tested.
