Mmmm. That's not how I view it. Eventually they fail to keep up with the changes in the environment. The niche they were overadapted to vanishes, or a comet strikes the earth and wipes them out, or their own further evolved descendents outcompete them.

It's true that sexual selection can provide grotequeries that are maladaptive, like those Irish elk with antler racks so big they couldn't lift their heads. But that's just because sexual selection is another kind of selection from the environmental adaptive kind, and two independent processes without feedback will get out of sync.
