Overpopulation's self-correcting mode?

Does all this have a contradicting factor, that is--could such a worldwide disease like sars, etc. self-correct overpopulation? I know all organic species have developed some genetic characteristic that led to the demise of their populations. I wonder what genetic factor will dome mankind? The human brain?
