It's called the Integral Fast Reactor or IFR. It is intrinsically safe from runaway and meltdown and its waste is low level, rather than high level radioactive. Unlike the high atomic number radio actinides in normal nuclear waste - which do indeed pose a problem for long term storage - this waste could be stored underground with little danger to anyone, and its radioactivity would diminish to background in a few score years, rather than thousands.

The Argonne national lab in Chicago was working on this and it was a ray of hope. Then the Clintons threw a bone to their left wing by cancelling it. (By the way, I voted for Clinton twice, and am not sorry I did, but this was truly a sorry scene).
