From what little I've read, there's some solid science done by folk in that general area; after all, much of what you'd need to bone up on (hah, ignorant me saying this) would come from chemistry, biology, even boring old botany and zoology. No reason to think the body of these areas - which should form the bedrock of environmental studies - has seen any less rigourous application of the scientific method than physics.
