We can consider all the universe or no part of it in our description. And unions and intersections of the any part of the universe is still a member of the universe. So the universe is a topology. I wonder, though if a black hole singularity can be considered as part of the universe. Another question might be whether this topology has sufficient characteristics to be a differentiable manifold. Or whether there are parts in the universe that would disallow this description.
