Particles would be the vibrations of, umm, space or spacetime in string/brane theory. In LQG, space has a sort of matter contamination in the spin indices on the edges of the simplices. There are for real, Topological Quantum Field theories, and every kind of advanced particle physics has deep connections with topology. A lot of this is beyond me, but it surely suggests that topology has finally broken into the big time in physics. Regards, Follow Ups: (Reload page to see most recent)
