So, in order to specify some region around the removed critical point, it would have to represent a boundary to a closed manifold?

In other words, to write an equation for something that avoids the critical point, the equation (for a line, surface, volume, etc.) becomes a manifold in and of itself?

Can a manifold include a critical point?

Thanks.
