Mike,

If you remove a point from a closed manifold without boundary iy becaomes an open mani9fold without boundary. If however you were to remove everything inside a finite sphere around the point, then the manifold would acquie a boundary, namely the spherical surface (or hypersurface of the hypersphere, in higher dimensions).
