The point is, a lot of topics from algebraic geometry are used in string theory, so you could take a look at an abstract topic (such as the construction of K3 or Calabi-Yau manifolds); this would almost certainly help you understand string theory. String theorists use practical algebraic geometry *a lot*. But from the mathematical point of view, it's also very intruiging, because mathematicians do A. G. over finite fields, which means tons and tons of abstract algebra and number theory. So you have the benefit of learning the tools of the trade, while working on a purely mathematical topic.
