Actions, Amplitudes, and the geometry of it all

I'm trying to get an intuitive understanding of String Theory (as everyone here I suppose). And the key for me is to understand the geometry involved.

So far I understand the Action to be proportional to the surface area of a world-sheet in string theory. OK, that's something to start with.

But then quantum mechanical amplitudes and phases are calculated from these actions, right? I don't get that.

Can anyone explain?

Thanks.
