What immediately strikes me is this: Let's say that for whatever reason, a researcher has need to track the movement of a two dimensional object in a two dimensional space. (video games are a classic example) For this event he needs only three dimensions, time being the third dimension here. Likewise, if a character was capable of moving in only one dimensional space (as on a game board) then a total of two dimensions would be mathematically necessary to chart the dot/line segment's movement. So then, time is not necessarily the fouth dimension; rather, we only choose to label it as such. We note perhaps that for every momentary dimension, there may be a respective time sub-dimension? Is it possible to move--in four dimensional spacetime--in only two dimensions at once? In such case, would relativity allow us to conclude that the other two do not--relative to the observer--exist? Do dimensions pop into being as needed and then disappear?
