They now feel they can legitimately talk about "compactification" and that gives them more phenomena thay can investigate. I am now reading a paper on adS/CFT and the attempt to generate QCD from it. The KK object here is an anti-deSitter space of 5 dimensions crossed with a 5 dimensional hypersphere. That is the whole object is 10 dimensional and analogous to a trumpet shape, with the circular cross-section of the trumpet standing in for the 5-sphere and the swooping contour of the trumpet representing the anti-deSitter space.
