Strings bend and move and have a two dimensional worldsheet; the geometry and curvature of this worldsheet is important to the development and calculation of string properties. Strings, although one dimensional, are assumed to have mass and tension, ordinarily thought of as belonging to bulk matter. The mass and tension also come into the string amplitude calculations.
