A search in arXiv yields some 10 results from "twistor" & "string". So twistors are being used, but not very much...

I think the real power of twistors lies more in their alternative approach to quantum gravity. I heard somewhere that in 2001 Penrose had even managed to make a big step forward in this area, but I can't recall any details.

I'd like to know more about twistors, too. From what I've heard about them, they seems curiously powerful and elegant, but for some reason not a lot of people use them... (Even the university of Oxford twistor page, which should be the epicentre of twistor research, was last updated October 1998)
