Ummm. The development of the Atom Bomb in WWII was, at least initially, a close thing. The Allies had a couple of key things happen that the Germans did not, and so the Allies developed the bomb and the Germans did not (The play Copenhagen revives the old canard that the Germans did not because of intellectual sabotage by high minded Heisenberg. The evidence is otherwise. The failure was technical).

If those couple of events had not occured, maybe the Manhatten Project would not have happeded and the bomb would not have been developed. Would it have been developed later? It's hard to believe that it wouldn't have happened sometime. But maybe it would never have been used.
