What's it for?

What can the string theory be used for really? I never really understood what they are either.

How do White Holes appear? Black Holes appear because of the process of a star "turning" Hydrogen into Iron. You cannot "turn" Iron into Hydrogen though. Explanation?

(Forgive my ignorance - I have never cared for physics before I started reading astronomy in winter last year.)
