Density operator viewpoint of QM

I'm familiar with Feynman, Heisenberg and Schrodinger (and even a little bit of Bohm) viewpoint of QM but recently I came across the density operator approach to QM. Is this yet another viewpoint of QM invented by Von Neumann? I recall a long time ago reading something about how Von Neumann developed a version of QM together with some mathematical theory, is this it? If yes, what's the mathematical theory called?
