That is a good thought. Using the spacetime blanket analogy, that would be like the black hole ripping through the "blanket" the instant that it became a singularity. Would the mass itself disappear, leaving only gravity in the form of bent spacetime? Where would the mass go? Or am I just way off what you were saying?
