Background radiation - from where??

Hi everyone, I have a question that have puzzeled me for quite some time. The thing is the microwave background radiation. I know that the source of this radiation is believed to be an "echo" created from the BB. It erupted "everywhere" in the universe at the event of BB, so that the source was "everywhere". That's understandable, so far so good. But what i dont really understand is that, why is it still here (i.e why haven't it already passed us completely long time ago)?? Think of this analogy: If I light at flashlight, lightbeams will be emitted from the bulb. When I turn it off no new lightbeams will be emitted. The emitted lightbeams will ofcourse continue to travel through space, but once they have passed the observer, the obsever will not be able to observe it any longer. Given this scenario, what is the difference between this and that of the constantly observable background radiaton?? Hope some of you have an answer to this (maybe abit silly) question! Best regards, Joachim Plocinski
