Maybe you can take a look to this SST link with a photo of a balloon.
Starting from one balloon membrane that is infolded you get a new double
layered zone in which other properties "rule". We can call that a holon. The
knot on the other images represent normal knots (peaks stay separated) or
pelastrations (new multi-layered unit created from two peaks).

I hope it helps you to visualize better the basics of the concept.
