Particles and points

In physics the use of (matematical) points is widely used. In quantum theory this leads to trouble. As I have understand strings, they are minimal extensions of points, regarding the uncertainly relations.

But, if the energy of a particle is determined by the energy of its interaction, as in the case of electrons, there is no need for viewing particles as strings. The particle are then topologically neighbourhoods (parts of universe). Isn't the right thing to do to viewing the particles center of energy as non-points and perhaps strings?
