FTL is possible, in the sense that certain parts of the waveform are correlated mathematically. That has been shown conclusively in experiment. You should also read up on the Aharanov-Bohm effect.

There is not enough information thats passed though, so in that sense action at a distance is not correct.

Photons don't have to get around anything, since 'anything' is also a quantum field. Far enough away, they all have that footprint. Measurement merely localizes the waveform, but recall the uncertainty principle, some noncommuting observable still remains waving around.

The more technical reason why all this is necessary, comes in the form of unitarity. If these fields don't go off to infinity, unitarity breaks down and thats bad.
