The point of the math is that the photon, considered as a wave packet, does not have any particular size and shape that is constant from one experiment to another. It depends on the initial conditions, and it is something QED can calculate if desired in a particular case.

So if you accept QED calculations, it's pointless to ask what the size and shape of a photon is. The answer (like the crooked accountant's query) is "what do you want it to be?"
