You won't have to wait very long; there are active proposals for a 21^st century version, e.g. the TPF (Terrestrial Planet Finder).

Actually, it will be your experiment (I insist); I will gladly help facilitate, but I really do want you to 'own' this experiment. (I should add that you need a reasonable number of people interested to join in; shouldn't be too much of a problem, seeing as how there was a pretty extensive discussion here on the topic not so long ago).
