not chemistry but electron and x-ray diffraction techniques may give a
clue. I don't know how far they can go.

So the experiment can be quite simple, but it's out of my possibilities.
Imaging should happen without correction algorithms. Hydrogen as most
simple can be indicative, but less clear (size of such cord-connection?).
There are rare hydrogen atoms with an extra neutron (these may give more
clear results). Let's say 500 photo's should be sufficient to catch some such
connection-cord on sphere (indeed you done know where to start).
