This makes the gauge fields discrete and allows one to compute difficult transition processes by standard (and some not-so-standard) numerical techniques used to solve differential equations. One then takes the limit of these results as the lattice spacing approaches 0 and the lattice becomes a continuum in order to extract real-world predictions. Such an approach is most often used for QCD, where processes at low energies are nigh-impossible to describe perturbatively. phobos
