Gravity, in a small area, only goes one way. There are forces other than gravity, driven by local difference of pressure, like my geyser, or by being in a non-inertial frame of reference, such as the Coriolis force we experience from taking our spinning earth to be an inertial (unaccelerated) frame. And there are thermodynamic and electromagnetic forces too. All of these can and do act in our daily lives and in small areas for short periods of time they can overcome gravity. Ther's no mystery seeing something suspended in midair, if that something is a helicopter.
