The RW metric is derived from Einstein's equations by assuming constant curvature. In more general approaches, spacetime is assumed to be nearly flat between gravity wells. And the curvature in GR is "intrinsic"; it is all defined within spacetime, there is no higher dimensional space to hold the curvature as there is in the low dimensional analogies (balloon, rubber sheet).
