according to Dr.Syed Ameen's equation:
D = V - 1
where D is dimensions,V is the number of variables involved,and the dimensions then are always one less than the number of dimension.
In Group Theoretical treatment,one goes after analysing the Symmetry elements and then classify into SPACE GROUPS,like tetrahedral,hexagonal,bipramid etc.etc.
If one performs some systematic analyses of the processes involved while CRYSTALIZATION is occuring,the Thermodynamics of the phenomenon could throw light on the kind and number of variables which lead to formation of a particular Space Group in the Group theoretical Tables associated with the symmetry elements of the crystal in question.So that is one possible way to classify I suppose.
