The interesting thing is that the "dirty dozen" configuration allows the outer layer, if there is one, to be more dense than the inner regions, which leads to the hollow sphere as a simplest model. Or a sphere filled with gas as a next approximation, or a sphere filled with more complex stuff, or a more complex shape filled with more complex stuff, and so on. The thing about the sphere as a model is it is relitively easy to make some rough estimates of the consequences. Hope you are well, John. I have a cold.
