The comparison of GR and quantum theory at the Planck scale remains the same. Einstein's view was a rebuke to people who viewed his theory (GR) as decribing the curvature of a "thing", the spacetime continuum as they used to say when I was young, or the underlying manifold as they say nowadays. Einstein had thought himself out of that view when he thought up the hole argument (you recall) and then argued himself out of it.
