I am thinking over your comments, and am going back to MTW for insight. One thing that bothers me is your reference to the singularity as a point. In the spacetime diagrams, the singularity has a world line. In conformal Kruskal coordinates it's an edge.

I agree that my analysis was too simple, but the reality turns out to be pretty complex!
