What Does a Growing Black hole Mean?

This is not directly related to the posted question, but is a more fundamental question.

Does a growing black hole mean greater mass, a greater radius/circumference of the event horizon, or both?

Can one grow without the other, or do they always grow together?

Most fudamentally, is there a functional relationship between the mass and the size of the event horizon?
