The notion of an explosion was never accurate.

I don't know its exact origins, in terms of who first used the term, but it was undoubtedly an attempt to explain the big bang to the general public (i.e., laymen) in terms of an analogy they would understand.

After all, an explosion is more intuitively understandable than spacetime itself expanding.
